Taiji [2]

About [Square]

How should the [Square] be understood? It can be seen as the infinite square number in algebra. It can also be the Righteous Path in the morality, or the concept of force in metaphysics. Be it spiritual or physical, it originates from one fundamental concept, the doctrine of the mean.

About [Yin and Yang in Taiji]

[Taiji] is an important concept in traditional Chinese philosphy. In the Book of Change, the concept of Yin and Yang was introduced. Yin and Yang can be understood as positive and negative numerals in maths, the good and evil in the value system, or the force and counter force in metaphysics.

About [Yin]

Yin as [the exterior] / On the first floor, there is a mini garden with ponds, which is typically Chinese. It highlights the connotation of gathering wealth and safeguarding of the house. The large glass window makes the space semi-open, interacting with the mini outdoor garden with the pond.

Yin is shown as [the old] / The ceiling on the first floor keeps its classical decorative lines. It integrates with the minimalist space, forming a dialogue between the new and the old.

Yin as [chaos] / The use of irregular geometry elements on the first floor together with the regular geometry elements form a contrast and conflict in the internal order.

About [Yang]

Yang is shown as [interior] / It is believed that [Shi Gan Dang, which is a small stone statue] can ward off evil spirits. As its name shows, this lovely little stone statue has the courage to ward off the evil spirits. The vertical generatrix of the staircase on the first floor hedges with the door so as to avoid the geomancy’s taboo. Placing [Shi Gan Dang] at the meeting area also serves this purpose. Through the cement folded plate, it forms a new design language. It’s half in the wall and half extended outwards.

Yang is shown as [originality] / The expression of beauty through abstract lines, this design tries to embrace the dynamic features of the space, making it trendy and chic. From the entrance at the first floor, one would see the meeting desks stretching. The armless staircase interact with the semi-open space.

Yang is shown as [order] / This design adopts the concept of Yin and Yang in Taiji in its design language. Different spatial areas co-exist in harmony, just like the way Yin and Yang co-exists in Taiji, presenting an internal order. From the ponds in the garden to the generatrix, it aims at seeking an abstract order.

About the [user]

The client are artists engaged in the digital audiovisual sector. Initially, the designer tried to explore the possibility of integrating existing exterior space (Chinese garden with ponds) into the building interior (mechanisms or events). Through the user’s own philosophy of “square shaped Taiji”, the spatial structure and elements are regarded as a way of stepping into the perceptual space. Based on the concept of Yin and Yang, it highlights the value of “moderation and balance”.
